Wolfram's Black Box: a biologist's take on Wolfram|Alpha

Alpha seems to me like an excellent preview of the future for human - machine augmentation... I agree with all the critics of the system right now; but a bigger view of things is needed to grasp the potential, soon we will be able to help ourselves to better understand some of the more complex concepts in nature, and be better human beings because of it. (For example, we still suck at grasping exponential growth, volume, etc... See my previous post: )

What are your opinions on Alpha?

En ArsTechnica lei precisamente esta conclusión de un articulo sobre un experimento de la mecánica cuántica:

Me encantó leer a alguien defender mi punto de vista con respecto a los debates que tenia con mi abuelo... :D

Cosa que se alinea con una página que me envió Rubén:

• scientists argue: this model shows how the probability of life spontaneously forming is quite high as theories defend it as logically sane and probable path within these given initial conditions.
• critics say: well there is no garantue, pribiotic life had these very same specific initial conditions.
• scientist retorts (and I chat along): I know, I mean wow, this is life without even water, something we have sustained as critical to life, it could be an alternative equal path. it seems even though this path we are investigating turns out perfectly plausible, life has even more ways of 'spontaneusly' showing up! :D

As you may know... MS bribed countries to enter ISO and vote for their format... read ahead:

"Microsoft's OOXML did not get enough votes to be approved the first time around in ISO/IEC — notwithstanding the fact that many countries joined the Document Format and Languages committee in the months before voting closed, almost all of them voting to approve OOXML. Unfortunately, many of these countries also traded up to 'P' level membership at the last minute to gain more influence. Now the collateral damage is setting in. At least 50% of P members must vote (up, down, or abstain) on every standard at each ballot — and none of the new members are bothering to vote, despite repeated pleas from the committee chair. Not a single ballot has passed since the OOXML vote closed. In the chairman's words, the committee has 'ground to a halt.' Sad to say, there's no end in sight for this (formerly) very busy and influential standards committee."

Realmente me podría conformar con cualquiera de estos jugueticos... :D, pero el XDA flame con un teclado bluetooth laser suena muuuuy interesante...

Por otro lado están los dispositivos de OpenMoko... Me encanta la idea de escribir mi propia interfaz para mi celular... y veo la capacidad de venderle a las compañías interfaces corporativas para que sus ejecutivos puedan realizar las tareas más comunes entre ellos de una manera exquisitamete personalizada...

Will porn put HD-DVD over Blue-Ray? Did betamax really loose because there was no porn on it?! Is it a problem of choice? Is sony morally above the rest of us? Or should the right to choose what you can or cannot see be left to someone else? Is this the case with HD-DVD ? I can burn anything in the privacy of my home... Sarusa writes in slashdot: "If this is true, it's Beta vs VHS all over again and HD-DVD may be the foregone winner of the format wars. First, Heise reports (summarized from the German by sgknox.com) that Digital Playground, who were committed to Blu-ray last year, are now producing HD-DVD titles instead. No Blu-ray disk manufacturer would make their disks because Sony doesn't want porn on Blu-ray (just as with Betamax). Second, as reported by tgdaily, the porn industry overwhelmingly favors HD-DVD because it's much cheaper and easier to produce. As noted in the tgdaily article, porn was a huge factor in VHS winning the VHS/Beta format wars even though many people don't like to acknowledge it. Porn, like gaming, pushes tech adoption."
